SuperTrees Inc.
In the early 1980's, Ben Walker (co-founder) became
dissatisfied with the quality of root systems of the trees he
was purchasing. The field-grown B&B trees were slow to establish
and problems from root deformed trees were showing up in customers
landscapes, such as blow over and declining health. In addressing
the problem, he developed a product called a Tree Sox. In
the late 1990's he became acquainted with a company in Scotland
that had developed a 3-dimentional container called Superoots
Air-Pots™. The patented design of this new container guide
the growing roots towards holes in the sides of the pot. Once
a root tip reaches a hole, the air dehydrates it and forces development
of new roots. This new technology is called air-pruning and results
in healthier and stronger trees from the start. After testing
the product himself, he started importing Air-Pots™ and
began introducing it to several nursery growers. Additional costs,
a need to change some of the production processes, and a lack
of understanding by the public of the importance of a good root
structure are some of the challenges that he faced. A plan
to overcome these problems was definitely needed.
While attending Brigham Young University, Brant Walker (co-founder) conducted market research on root caused problems and found that most nursery professionals including garden centers, landscapers, and landscape architects considered circling roots (root bound, pot bound, girdling roots) to be a major problem and would prefer to purchase trees that didn't have this problem. In 2004 Brant developed a business plan to help make SuperTrees (trees grown using this patented technology) available to the public. He entered this business plan (Superoots USA) into the BYU MBA Business Plan Competition. Brant didn't think a fancy looking nursery pot would be much competition for the high tech startups, but that's not what the judges thought.
After winning the BYU Business Plan Competition, Fortune Magazine called and asked Brant to enter his business plan into the National MBA Business Plan Competition that they sponsor each year. This national competition is by invitation only and is comprised of the winners of all the MBA business plan competitions nationwide. Competing against the best business plans from Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and others, SuperTrees became a semi-finalist and finished amongst the top 9. With a solid business plan, seed money, and national exposure we were on our way to making SuperTrees available to the public.
After about a year of preparation we had our first crop of SuperTrees ready for the 2005-2006 season. We started off with only five garden centers in Utah carrying SuperTrees and have expanded into Idaho, Nevada, and Colorado. We are excited about the companies growth and are working to bring SuperTrees to everyone in the United States and Canada in the near future. If you are interested in becoming one of our distributors please contact us. We also take referrals for nursery centers, so if there isn't one in your area please talk to your favorite centers about becoming a SuperTree distributor!
