The Japanese Stewartia is known for it's red-gray flaky bark that it exhibits year round and the showy white flowers that appear mid-summer. It's shape is generally pyramidal to oval and will grow up to 40 feet tall. Does best in light shade, at least in hottest part of summer. Prefers moist, cool, humus-rich, slightly acid soil, with good drainage. Hardy to USDA Zone 5.
